COLLECTIVE

HERBIVORES eat plants, CARNIVORES eat meat. DETRITIVORES are the trillions of organisms that eat only WASTE.

Detritivores are the bridge between death and life; transmuting what is waste for one species into a resource for all of us. Think the worms, bacteria, and fungi working to produce beautiful, nutrient rich soil.

Our collective is all of nature’s detritivores; working pragmatically to turn waste into life. Our collective is also our team, collaborators, and clients who share an ecological sensibility and a vision of using resources for greater community abundance.

We hope to grow our collective of friends to include more and more people who share these values. Whether it’s relationships with our clients or interdependent connections with artists, architects, event planners, etc. in our community. Want to collaborate? Click HERE.

OUR TEAM

Whitner Grange

Whitner Grange

Founder

Whitner developed his passion for urban food production and ecological farming as an Environmental Studies major at University of California Santa Barbara where he helped found and managed the Isla Vista United Methodist Church Community Garden.

While working in construction and residential architecture after graduating, he sought to bring together his love for local food production with his passion for design work and craftsmanship.

Equally important was a drive to improve fair labor practices in the landscaping and construction industries. The Detritivore Collective commits to paying fair wages and acting with transparency and respect towards its employees and contractors.

Sydney Grange

Sydney Grange

Garden / Farm Lead

Sydney Grange is a farmer and social justice advocate living in Mendocino county, California. For the past 6 years, she has been focusing on growing complete diets while using minimal land and external inputs.

Sydney is our team lead for Mendocino-based projects, and works as a remote farmscape designer and crop planner on projects in the SF bay area.

She is always experimenting with staple crops that can be grown locally in Mendo. This interest led Sydney to develop her delicious quinoa tempeh burgers under the label “Syd’s Tempeh Co.“! Syd’s Tempeh burgers are made from quinoa grown in Arcata, California. Check out her website: www.sydstempeh.com
